Last year, Big Creek People in Action (BCPIA), with the generous support of Americans Helping Americans®, helped ensure that the spirit of togetherness filled McDowell County from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Across several weeks, families gathered for community meals, children laughed through festive games, and volunteers worked side by side to make sure everyone had something special to enjoy.

With funding provided by Americans Helping Americans®, BCPIA organized and hosted multiple events where food was at the heart of the celebration. Partner churches — including Berean Way Church and South Carolina Baptist Church — delivered hundreds of turkeys and food boxes, while BCPIA volunteers served hot meals and handed out groceries, winter coats, and gifts for children.

In Caretta, the community center came alive with the sounds of laughter and conversation as families shared plates of roasted turkey, vegetables, and homemade desserts. For many, it was the first full, festive meal they had enjoyed in months. Parents who had been struggling to stretch their budgets smiled as their children decorated cookies and sipped hot chocolate, and elderly neighbors left with full hearts — and full food boxes — to carry them through the week ahead.

Every gathering reflected what BCPIA and Americans Helping Americans® have built together over the years: a network of compassion that reaches into every corner of the county. Volunteers described the joy of seeing families come together over a shared meal, while recipients expressed gratitude not just for the food, but for the kindness and dignity that came with it.

As one participant shared, “It’s not just a meal — it’s a reminder that someone cares about us.”

Through these holiday events, BCPIA and Americans Helping Americans® brought warmth to cold December days and strengthened the bonds that hold the community together. Together, they turned simple meals into lasting memories — proof that when compassion is shared, everyone has a place at the table.
